Fungi Foray

Tour provided by: fungi to be with
Based on 3 reviews
Tour Description:

Fungi foray: A 4 hour foray into one of Londons parks or woodlands in search of mushrooms & toadstools.  The foray begins with a short talk, giving an overview of the mushrooms & toadstools in England, highlighting diffferences between some of the more frequent edible and toxic species.  Most species found during the foray will be identified to species if possible, if not, then to genus.  All species will be noted and a species list compiled and made available to the managing body of the area forayed and to the those attending.   Some of the more unusual species will be collected, dried, written up and deposited at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, fungi herbarium.  A greater understanding of distribution patterns and important information for local bio-diversity action plans is the reward for providing these 'voucher specimens' and species lists.  Those attending the forays will be allowed to collect enough edible mushrooms for their own personal consumption.

Andy's enthusiam for fungi is infectious. I've been on his walks in different locations in and around London and always learn something new. Great for everyone from absolute beginners to experts like him.

I have been on around 4 trips out with Andy including a session in the classroom in order to learn more. On every outing I have had a great time. Informative, fun, value for money. The groups are small enough to feel you have sufficient time with Andy to show him what you have found, yet big enough to feel you are part of an enthusiastic group where you all learn from each other. Andy is so very knowledgable and very passionate about his subject. You are left with enough confidence to know how to identify the main mushroom families. On every occasion, I have gone home with a basketful of mushrooms to eat for my dinner! It really is a great day out. Take a packed lunch and a flask of tea and of course waterproofs - it always rains!

I have been going on fungi forays with Andy Overall (fungi to be with) for at least 10 years now, on and off, both to the New Forest and Hampstead Heath. The forays are always excellent value for both pleasure and information, and it is definitely the best way to learn about edible and poisonous fungi, in a relaxed manner. Andy is very knowledgable, and because the groups are small in number, he always has as much time as you need to help with identification. I can thoroughly recommend these forays (even when it rains).
